Tulsa Costco Opens
On Time. As Always.
Some things you can set your watch by. One of them is a project that Brian Donnellan leads.
Take his most recent finished project—The new Tulsa Costco warehouse that opened May 25th, four days ahead of the originally planned opening date.
Begun on August 8, this project had all kinds of challenges. Extensive import. Modification of surrounding roads. And, as always, Oklahoma’s infamous weather. But meeting challenges are exactly the kind of thing that sets SEI apart.
“Every job has its snags. That’s just the business. For example, the bedrock hampered the ability of another contractor to create sanitary tie-ins for the site. But if you learn one thing in construction, you learn to plan for those issues and adapt.”
At SEI, flexibility and rolling with the punches is all in a day’s work. The way we see it, and Brian sees it, it’s a matter of thinking ahead. Not to mention putting the right amount of resources in the right place at the right time.
“I think projects like this play into our strengths. We work hard to deploy equipment before it’s needed, not after. What’s more, because SEI gives team members the freedom to make sound judgments in the day-to-day of the project, I really have an easy job. All credit is due to the guys I worked with on this one.
The new Tulsa Costco required ongoing coordination with the City of Tulsa, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and other entities, as well as the construction teams for the overall development. But, as Brian says, trust and communication is all in a day’s work.
“We are always talking to our subs, the other contractors, the government agencies, you name it. Funny thing? The better you communicate, the more smoothly everything goes.”
However, this was no routine project. The new location is considerably larger than most Costco warehouses, encompassing 26.91 acres with a 204,000 sf warehouse. In addition, the site’s Fuel Station takes up an additional 6,000 sf. Add two retention ponds and a retaining wall, and this becomes one of Costco’s most ambitious projects yet.
Yet, despite building on a different scale, some things remain the same. Brian and his team’s ability to marshal resources and deliver on schedule. Thanks always to Costco for your continued trust. We look forward to moving heaven and earth to meet your deadlines.
